چکیده

The paper presents a new method of sample size determination (SSD) based on performance evaluation of systems under study. The method builds upon previous work on Bayesian approach to nonparametric receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis with estimation of probability density functions and confidence intervals for parameters of ROC curve. Technical details of the method together with an illustration of its application to a real clinical example is given. The advantages of the method include ability to handle and compare models built using multidimentional, multimodal data, with no need for prior estimation of the effect size and variability. The disadvantages of the approach include high computational requirements, especially when the method of SSD deploys AUC as a measure of systems performance.

ROC curves in clinical chemistry: uses, misuses, and possible solutions.

BACKGROUND ROC curves have become the standard for describing and comparing the accuracy of diagnostic tests. Not surprisingly, ROC curves are used often by clinical chemists. Our aims were to observe how the accuracy of clinical laboratory diagnostic tests is assessed, compared, and reported in the literature; to identify common problems with the use of ROC curves; and to offer some possible s...

Sample size determination for logistic regression

The problem of sample size estimation is important in medical applications, especially in cases of expensive measurements of immune biomarkers. This paper describes the problem of logistic regression analysis with the sample size determination algorithms, namely the methods of univariate statistics, logistics regression, cross-validation and Bayesian inference. The authors, treating the regr...

Bayesian Sample size Determination for Longitudinal Studies with Continuous Response using Marginal Models

Introduction Longitudinal study designs are common in a lot of scientific researches, especially in medical, social and economic sciences. The reason is that longitudinal studies allow researchers to measure changes of each individual over time and often have higher statistical power than cross-sectional studies. Choosing an appropriate sample size is a crucial step in a successful study. A st...

Sample size calculations for ROC studies: parametric robustness and Bayesian nonparametrics.

Methods for sample size calculations in ROC studies often assume independent normal distributions for test scores among the diseased and nondiseased populations. We consider sample size requirements under the default two-group normal model when the data distribution for the diseased population is either skewed or multimodal. For these two common scenarios we investigate the potential for robust...

Determination of the Size of a Trial, Using Lindley’s Method

Extended Abstract. When a new treatment is being considered, trials are carried out to estimate the increase in performance which is likely to result if the new treatment were to replace the treatment in current use. Many authors have looked at this problem and many procedures have been introduced to solve it. An important feature of the analysis in this work is that account is taken of the fac...
